Hello!
I am in the middle of a project, and I want to recreate something like the dash FX in this game (the smoke on the ground).
I have not done any effects like that before how would u guys approach it?
Especially how it fades away.
Hello!

You can go 2 ways. Both require handdrawn most likely.
it game me the illusion of being a mesh that gets replaced and then at then a drawing of the end fading of the could.
There are lots of ways to achieve a certain result, so who knows ![]()
I think this is a fully 2D flipbook. Toward the end, the outline disappears, perhaps that’s why you thought it was transitioning, but it could be a design choice. I feel like the illusion of depth is rendered quite well, so it almost looks 3D. The placement of the sprite cards also helps create the 3D illusion as can be seen in the second image.
I could be wrong though, I would be shocked if it were 3D ![]()
mmh I see thank you guys!
The intersection in this frame looks 3D
In this frame we see the sequence after several frames and on the far right the first frame of the same sequence. Interesting how well they merge without visible seams
The intersection of the two sequences also looks 3D but it is more clear in the video with the frame before
I am pretty unsure about the dissipation. Looks 2D but could also be done within the shader
I can imagine it is a 2D image sequence mapped to 3D meshes that match the shapes of the images and are slightly bulging towards the camera
I did not even notice that!
That could be it. How to people approach mesh replacement?
The intersections could also be a heightmap.
It’s used usually with realistic flipbooks to look more 3D
So still hard to say if 2D or 3D T_T
