What is your favourite art book?

I am a big fan of art books. Personally, I prefer if the content is made up mostly of concepts, work-in-progress, behind-the-scenes material etc. – not so much the explanatory texts that are sometimes added. I have seen some really great art books for both movies and games. My favourite one must be either for Into the Spiderverse or the one for Diablo 3.

I thought it could be something interesting to share here – among likeminded VFX artists.

Elemental Magic by Joseph Gilland! He’s an old school cartoon fx animator and his book breaks down the principles of all elements and how energy affects the way they behave. A great read for its ideas and an excellent reference book for frame by frame animations, tons of great pictures to look through.

It’s one I’ve only seen in a movie :stuck_out_tongue:

The art bible they made for Jodorowsky’s Dune (a movie that was never made)

Check out the documentary: Jodorowsky's Dune (2013) - IMDb

You’ll be blown away by the artists involved in that (you’ve heard of some, surely).

I’ll second LimaBean on the books by Joseph Gilland. He wrote 2 of them.
Elemental Magic and Elemental Magic Vol. 2. Both are insightful for real time vfx.
