I’m doing so retroactive progress steps showing my process so far.
First up, I gathered some references.
This one of a chemical reaction inside a Jack-O-Lantern was what really got my creative thinking:
I also collected some game visual reference, and turns out I gravitate towards liking Blizzard games loot box animations because I really like these,

Then like two weeks ago, I was on a plane with my iPad and start planning out the effect with concepts of the different stages.
Also did some thinking about how I wanted to split everything up into quads and other meshes:
This week I’ve been blocking things out in Unity with a timeline, just getting all of my base elements in place. I did have some fun doing some squash and stretch on this old pumpkin model I have!
