How do you make realistic effects look 3D?

Hi people it’s me again with a tricky question :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I recently started to learn FumeFX and after some flipbooks done i was wondering, how am i even supposed to make a realistic explosion and not a flipbook fiesta,

It’s obvious that my explosion is a sprite, it lack some depth so i thought about merging multiple plane in different direction and make it so that it looks 3D in every direction i’ll need to experiment with that but it could be nice if some of you knew some stuff about that.

My other option is to stack different part of the explosion and put them carefully (maybe replace some sprite if the player is above the particle) also filling it with random smoke and fire could be the way, i don’t really know at this point. I would love to know what do you guys do to make some awesome realistic explosion

This post is a great read and answers your question with one particular technique that’s fantastic. Follow the links in the thread and read those as well. Medric originally posted the technique.

You should be able to get something from breaking this apart
