Hello this is my first post on this forum :3
I’m glad i found it because i’ve been meaning to practice some VFX. (my main experience is from doing it in game jams or little additions to projects but i want to develop my skills further)
I also been needing a little distraction so i can get my mind of my uni project every once in a while.
For this topic of “Snow” i want to make a cool little freeze spell. i have the start for a rough 3d blockout:

I used some models and a texture i made for a previous effect, just starting to layout the timing and elements.
Animations are mixamo, i am considering tweaking them a bit later but i’m gonna focus on the VFX first ofc.
I drew over my blockout a lil so it comunicates the idea better:

I got quite busy due to the holidays and some school deadlines so i haven’t been able to work on the effect untill today. upcoming week i should have some more time to finish up this project.
Today i followed a tutorial for shaping icicles in houdini
LINK (if anyone is interested)
It’s my first time using a POP system so it was quite exiting to be able to simulate some growth. my favorite part is using the fire propagation system for the freeze effect haha!
this is my result after tweaking it for my purposes:

I still need to edit the timing a lil bit but the shapes are getting somewhere!
I’m thinking about either baking the animation into a mask to reveal it through a material or baking it down into a VAT if i can find a way to map the vertices consistently (it uses VDBs fairly extensively so i don’t get a consistent mesh atm)
