Hey all you amazingly talented people, I’m starting this topic here to share my VFX work and become good at my work, hit my goals. I tiny, hopefully not boring background about me would be;
My actual name is Sohan Dilusha, I’m from Sri Lanka. I mainly use Maya, Unreal Engine, Substance Designer, Photoshop/ Krita as my main tools as of right now. My main goal right now is to join a studio overseas and work remote from here, or if the opportunity comes go there. I love video games, movies where the ending I don’t quite understand and dogs.
I will be updating this thread regularly with my work and I’m super excited to be a part of this community, I will contribute as much as I can.
My first real time VFX
This is a Muzzle Flash I made yesterday, I wanted get rid of tutorials and handle it by myself so I got rid of the crutches. Muzzle Flash Using Unreal Engine Niagara - YouTube
The muzzle flash texture was made using substance designer and then assigned as a material to a sprite.
Main problems I ran into was that looking at the Muzzle flash from the top or some certain angles rendered it almost invisible. (Alignment/Facing issues), same issue with the sparks coming outta the gun. I need to be looking into ways to handle that.
Thanks a lot Ashif ! I was going through some of your Patreon work and those videos are a gold mine mate. You’re so good at what you do. I will make these changes and update
Nice start, you may be overthinking the flash a bit, you really don’t need so many quads, and oftentimes focusing on the shape and color of a larger, single camera aligned quad is 80% of a nice muzzle flash.
Even most very realistic games typically lean towards a single detailed flip book or texture for the main flame. The supplemental flames around it can help, but Ashif is right about focusing on the “core”. Focusing more on the color gradient in particular will make it look nicer.
I actually never thought about it that way, I was so focused on creating the perfect muzzle flash that is fancy and overlooked the fundamentals like the core being so bright. Thank you for the reply Andrew <3
Oh and sick work btw, I checked out your work just now. MACHINE
Made 8 muzzles to use on a sprite sheet so that every time it fires it’s a random texture that is being used.
Added shells being ejected from the gun.
Improved the overall aesthetic by adjusting timing and a bit of color values.
All the muzzle textures that I made aren’t very realistic even though that’s what I needed initially. I don’t have a problem creating stylized ones but realistic ones I struggle a bit because how organic they look. My next upload will probably be when I figure out how to make a realistic muzzle texture like these:
Heyyo! I created a simple Fortnite Aura effect called “Stellar Burst”. This was pretty fun to make and since it was pretty simple I was able to finish this in around 3 hours.
I will be trying to recreate more Auras from Fortnite and I will update them here.
I wanted to create a muzzle flash effect that feels like it’s coming from an energy weapon, and this is what I came up with! I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I learned so much from the process.
