Stanislav Petruk: Embergen Challenge

Final Submission

Hello. Here is my entry.
What I want to do here is a short story, made inside UE4
I’ve started with an opening sequence, so I could test wide shots and closeups. That is quite new to me, but hoping for a good result

In the beginning I use a lot of embergen smokes, in the climax there will be a falling bomb :boom:

Updated the video with one more shot. This one should reveal the bomb falling.

  • Also made simpler entrance (character and door animations are currently the placeholders.)

That mushroom cloud looks awesome! I love how sort of fluffy it looks at the top.

I was in a rush when I started to make the scene, so missed showing some of the progress. Before posting new updates I think it makes sence to fill these gaps

The scene is assembled in UE4. The main elements:

  • Shelter, power lines (modeled in 3ds max + textured in quixel mixer)
    08
The master material was applied to all iron elements
    09
  • The terrain generated in Houdini
    10
  • Trees - speedtree
    07
  • The explosion mushroom - embergen
    11
  • it is 6x6 sprite with motion vector
    06
  • And all together in UE
    01
    02
    03
  • nuke fx
    04
  • smoke particles - for the atmosphere (dust also generated in embergen)
    05

The next steps:

  • making the beginning of the explosion
  • character replacement
  • sound
  • additional details
  • optimization

Looks great man!
Is your flipbook exactly tied to the camera angle in engine?

Hey, thanks. I currently use 2k most of the time (but they are downsized from original 4k, in case I will need more resolution)

Thank you. The explosion is designed to be observed from the side, that would not look good from the top for sure

Top view explosion with a wave
explo_top

Used mostly the source files from the existing scenes
ue
I only added a bit of a bend (simple bones animation) to the trees located close to the explosion
max

Trees scattered in houdini and exported to unreal. I was not able to find a way to scatter them with the radial orientation in Unreal (I think there is a way but I am not smart anough for that )
houdini

Wave is a distortion + scaled up decal + embergen smoke

Today I am only adding one scene - a side view of the explosion wave. Still need to replace identical trees and add one close up of the shot.

I’ve added one more shot of the side wave (closer one).
Initial explosion sequence:

It’ s a line of trees in ue4

The trees are mostly bending, one of them breaks

Next step will be returning to the opening and closing scenes, and finalize the entry

So I am almost done. I’ve added the character, now I have a little bit of time for sound and details.
