RAM Question

For what kind of tasks would you say having 64 GB of RAM is optimal? (or a must have)

Thanks!

On the Houdini website, it says that it is optimal for fluid sims and pyro. Other than that, I don’t know if you need that much.

very huge level lightbakes sometimes need that much but I’ve had 32gb for the last 3-4 years and never felt the need to have any more.

probably better to make sure you get the fastest ram rather than the most tbh.

Ohh I see, by fastest you mean higher frequency or lower latency?

I’m between:

32 GB, 3200 Mhz, 14 CAS
or
64 GB, 3200 Mhz, 16 CAS

The 64 GB one costs around 130 USD more than the other one (roughly, not that much diff)

i’m not super techie but i was talking about frequency rather than latency.

The difference between 14 CAS and 16 CAS is small enough to be completely irrelevant. It’s a latency of 11ns vs 10ns, but depending on the CPU you have it might not even be relevant. The difference between a 2666 Mhz CAS 14 and 3200 Mhz CAS 16 might be as much as 1 second saved over a 2 hour long render using an Intel i7-8700k or Ryzen 1800x. 3200 Mhz CAS 14 might get you 1.1 seconds.

So 64 GB it is! they were near same price, so I guess it won’t hurt, thank you!
