Here is my try:
There are three particle systems: one for the middle (hard to see right now), one for volume and one for small particles flying up. Basic additive particle shader. And no optimization =)

Update:
oh! these lines add so much magic to it! love it i wonder if a slight bend of the flame could add nice variation to it…like when wind is blowly softly and changes direction slowly.
