Inspirational Resources for Stylized Effects

Hey guys! I’m wondering… where do you find inspiration for creating stylized effects? Any cool Anime’s, films or games that melt your eyes because they’re just too amazing?

For me I recently came across a show called Fate Stay Night. I can’t stop watching this specific fight scene… :astonished: :heart_eyes::joy::astonished:

Anywho, I’d love to hear what shows/references you guys use when looking for inspiration!

I find myself constantly referencing a specific sakuga video and image depot when I’m looking for stylized effect ideas or inspiration. It’s called Sakugabooru, and I’ve included the link below. I could get lost just clicking for hours/days/ever on this site. I hope that you guys/gals find it as useful as I do.

ahhh the scrolling curse got me aswell…! thanks for sharing!

what I do when I watch anime that I write down the episode & time of the interesting effects, so when I want to check, later on the weekend, the shape & motion of an effect. So that I have some data to work with.

Akira has some incredible sequences, this one’s probably some of the most beautifully animated smoke ever put to screen:

Another good scene:

And here’s a scene from Royal Space Force, I liked how raw the effects felt in this one:

Beyond the Boundary has some really nice stuff. Good show so far as well.

Ohh man I loved Fate Stay Night.
Lot of sick fights in there, it is very cool how they make use of timing and dramatic pauses for anticipation followed by big FX explosions and magical sparks.

Wind Waker is a pretty good example of some toony stylized FX.
Cool breakdown of a bunch of their stuff.

A comparison I like to make is between LoL and DotA, two very different styles but ultimately they need to get some similar FX in there. It’s interesting to see how they approach and resolve them in different ways.

You know, I was wondering how one would do this, like you did certain things in your reel but this Zelda article really broke down the technical side of how to do it and gave my noob skills a simple base to begin off of. Thanks for this.
