I’m a beginner in creating Game VFX and usually my works feel computer generated because its all procedural. I wish to learn Hand painting textures and specifically flipbooks (texture animation), How can I get started? any Books, articles, websites suggestions could really help me a lot!
Unfortunately, I’m unable to afford their course right now, and I feel stuck on this topic. If anyone has recommendations for free resources or advice, I’d really appreciate the help.
There are some nuggets of knowledge and reviews on VFX Apprentice and RTFX Animation YouTube channels.
Free 2dfx course on Gumroad from Adam Phillips:
Some demonstration videos from experienced 2D FX animators (search them on YouTube, as a new forum member I can only have two links in a post):
Alex Redfish
Quentin Cordonnier
Personally, I would start with analyzing and recreating effects that you like. This approach will help you develop better line control, build a visual library of shapes and styles, and gain an understanding of what makes motion and shapes interesting and dynamic. Start with single frame before moving on to frame sequences. Many great artists have personal projects, sketches on Artstation, Twitter/BlueSky etc.
As a side note, there is a texture pack that have hand-painted flipbooks and textures for use in games, but it’s not free.
And I think it’s always worth mentioning Elemental Magic books by Joseph Gilland when talking about 2D FX animation.
Thankyou very much for sharing all these resource and tips, I will definitely check this out and about the book, I go it recommended by an VFX artist from LinkedIn a while ago
