How do you learn to create hand-painted textures for real-time VFX?

Hello amazing people,

I recently started learning how to paint textures by hand for VFX. It’s been pretty tough so far, especially since I don’t come from a drawing background. I’m using a XP-Pen tablet and Krita to practice, but I still struggle a lot with getting things to look right. (I’ve attached what I worked on recently)

My goal is to reach a point where I can confidently make any type of hand-painted texture or flipbooks and If someone could shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it, thank you :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hi. How you learning, is it from YouTube or a paid online platfom?

Right now I’m following a course from VFX Apprentice Ken. I didn’t find anything else in regard to this.

Likewise Ashif, As of today I think I can manage a single texture for a sprite but there’s a lot of room for improvements. If it’s not much of a hassle for you, can you send me some of the tutorials that you did for hand painted texture mate?

Although it’s handy to make stylized hand painted texture for specific things, sometimes you can use shader math with a single texture to get the result you need, usually just using mesh manipulation to achieve your results.

There are some resources: https://quentincordonnier.gumroad.com/

But what I recommend is just draw a lot and analyze how others do that.
Some even post breakdowns like here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/8ebv4G

With handdrawn stuff there is no shortcut unfortunately apart from just practicing a lot
(but even regular 10mins a day can give you incredible results)

OHHH thank you so much for these @MadVFX . You’re right, when I first started drawing couple days ago I sucked so bad at it but with some practice I got to a point where I can create a single piece of texture (with some resistance) and make it usable.

That is the one I intended recommending, by Ali Sorensen. Anyways like MadVFX said, regular practice is the only way. Overtime, it would become effortless for you.
