WIP VFX - working on demo reel feedback

Hello everyone!
I’m quite new to new to games vfx and I’m trying to build a portfolio/demo reel, so I would love feedback on some of the vfx I am working on right now!

Currently I have a Beam vfx:
Beam VFX

and a Projectile AoE:
Projectile AoE
32 02-12-24-2013

I do feel like they are missing a bit of impact, but I’m not sure how to make it more :boom:BOOM :boom:
I’m open to any feedback on what I can do to improve or refine my fx!

I’m also curious if there’s anything specific or things that studios may look for in a vfx reel that I should add as well? I come from a film fx background so any advice for transitioning to games vfx is appreciated ^^
Thank you! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Ciao Soli,
a couple of tips:
if you want your effect to sound more “ :boom:BOOM :boom:” you should improve some aspects of your effect: first of all anticipation,
is good but you should modify the timing of these projectiles a bit,

maybe adding some “stasis” when they reach their maximum height, before crashing to the ground: it would add some suspense, but I’m still talking milliseconds. Or it would also help to add an animation and fx to the character loading the weapon, before firing.

Also, why are there only three and do they all go to the left? It would be more harmonious if they were distributed more or less equally (always using some randomness) around what will be the central explosion.

I did not quite understand the role of this sphere

Moving on to the more :boom:BOOM :boom: part, during the explosion I would add some camera shake, also I notice that the effects on the ground are formed before the actual impact on the ground.

In general a bit of general advice:
Timing of the whole effect is critical, pay attention to the anticipation, the “boom” moment and the dissipation of the effect, (e.g. your video lasts 0:08, where 0:02 are the seconds of the effect and the rest is all dissipation) try to figure out which effects are primary and which are secondary, to keep the whole sequence clean, and try to use different colors for these two different parts.

Anyway keep it up, you’re doing great :muscle:
