Tea: Sketch #65 "Winter Spell"

I will take about a week of my free time to work on a winter spell. This is my first RTVFX Sketch so I don’t have big expectations for this, I will just try to have some fun with it. Here’s a quick description of the spell:

You cast a skillshot-based projectile. After hitting a target, the projectile will bounce towards the two nearest enemies in a small radius. If one or more enemies are hit, they will be marked for 2–3 seconds, and this ability’s cooldown will be reset. If the enemies are hit by this ability again while marked, the mark will pop to deal extra damage (and the projectile will bounce again).

The spell has no name yet, and maybe never will, but I’d like to think of something. For the theme, I want to explore using some aurora-esque elements as the main body of the spell, along with the obvious snow/ice to support it and make it feel more wintery. Hope this explanation makes sense, and I will update this post as I make some progress on it!

First day, managed to set up a basic scene in Unreal and block out the timeline for the effect. This is my first time using Unreal’s sequencer so it took a minute to get used to it. This still feels very underwhelming and it’s bit embarassing to show but I wanted to share some progress

Make a bad beginning and you’ll contend with troubles ever after.

I sort of rushed the “concepting” phase of this project, and yesterday came to realize that the things I want to show in this effect (mainly auroras) don’t really place to shine in my spell. Didn’t see this going anywhere so I decided to completely change it before it’s gone too far, and here’s my new prototype! I hope this is a bit more exciting than the previous one.

PS: I’ve left behind my delusions of doing this in just a week, I’ve been busy with some stuff so I will take until the end of month to work on this!
