Hello hello!
I am studying Technical Art currently and have found joy in VFX. I’m starting a project where I intend to make some A-rpg sword swings with different elemental properties heavily inspired by FF16, any tips and tricks and or feedback would be appreciated!
First swings I made is without any elemental effects.
Should hopefully have some swings every couple days, only have halfdays of the schooltime to focus on this project.
I have also created sword swings with Water at this time.
Time for some Ice swings this time around (Ice impacts are for tomorrow)
Testing with scaling in meshes and not just planes and ribbons this time around

With some Fire and Ice, my learning continues!
I have been mostly been staying within Niagara and using interesting shader flipbooks and tiling noise in my learning so far. I have been pointed in the direction of using custom meshes instead of over-relying on Ribbons (and been encouraged to give more directionality in the impacts), and as such my next set of swings should have a slightly different feel! (hopefully better)
Earth and Wind.
Trying some new(for me) techniques, testing out making effects fade away with Alpha Dissolve/Erosion instead of just opacity. and for the Wind one I created my own swing static meshes instead of relying on ribbons like i’ve been mostly been doing up 'til now.
aaand finally some Lightning!
been fun trying to try and get the noise to update in a more staggered fashion, rather than the usual smooth progression. I will now start to look at Houdini for VFX and start my 2nd project.
