Taking things slower for the holidays but I got another update - got a ton of great feedback from some VFX friends to apply this time around

Reduced the time of the effect by a lot to make it snappier, added a vertical element to the ‘impact’ and a small resolution for the eye - excited to keep polishing both the old and new elements

Still chipping away at this between holiday chaos  small improvements as I’ve been wrestling with like 15 different approaches to a specific wispy smoke effect I want to make haha - so it goes

I really likectge contrasting spin motion and color.

How many emitters is this?

Rn its 14 in total for the whole effect, the spinning motion/ ground effect is 4 (The actual spinning effect, the ‘ring’, the eye and the extra glow/ crystal effect beneath the eye) But I intend to do some cleanup/ combining of shaders before the end to optimize it

More progress! Much happier with the shockwave effect this time around  Hoping to polish the anticipation and resolution as well as do some optimization, but I think I’m almost there!!

Also sorry these are so small??? I’m still working out the best way to record work and get it into gif format that’s also small enough

Still having trouble making smaller gifs, so for now im going to upload to imgur  some more work finished, as well as some optimization combining shaders so I don’t have to double up on meshes or sprites

It looks so cool! I specially love the style and theme of the effect, and how you used shapes and colour!

Almost seems like the og version could later be upgraded in-game to the current lightning-ground shock version.

Do u know approximately how many hrs/week you have been working on this effect? I’m just trying to gauge how long an effect of this caliber should take to be ready for portfolio or a shippable game. I get it if you have no clue. It’s hard to always track the time we work, and some days have much more progress than others. Looking amazing!

That’s a really cool idea!

HMMM this is a great question, especially since it was broken up across the holiday season so time ceased to exist for a while there - I’d say semi-shooting in the dark I worked roughly 4 hours a week on the effect? With that slowing down as we got into the holiday season  In total I’ve maybe spent maybe half a work week on it? So around 20 hours-ish. Hope that helps, sorry I can’t be more concrete

Another (small) update, as I will be out of town second half of this week - added some small sparks to the ends of the lighting

Wow. Thanks for the insight. I honestly would’ve thought longer. Looks very polished.

That is super kind of you! Thank you so much

And its finished! Got some really awesome feedback in the final stretch, and pretty happy with the result - the biggest take away being that I need to SPEED UP!! Looking forward excited to make effects faster and snappier
