Official VFX Sketch #39: SNES

Make an effect, or multiple effects emulating Super Nintendo Entertainment System era graphics! We’re not being super strict, but your entry should atleast feel like something that would run on an SNES! A few guidlines:

  • 16 colors per sprite
  • Sprites no larger than 64x64 pixels (note they do not need to be squared)
  • Only 2D (or perceived as 2D)
  • No framerate limit

Scoring and Winning:
As in the previous sketch we will be voting through a community voting system!

Judging criteria includes:

  • You showed WIP throughout the month
  • Your work is technically and artistically well-executed.
  • Followed challenge rules.

Submitting: Create a new topic in the " Events > 39: SNES " category with your name and sketch number in the title (Like this: “Toni Hon: Sketch #39” ), and post your updates to your topic during the month!

When you are finished, Edit your first post so it holds the final effect in the form of Youtube/Vimeo Video or High-Quality GIFs.

  • All entries must be made during the running period shown below.
  • Do feel free to use any tool, system or workflow that pre-existed. Although we encourage experimentation.

This one sounds promising! Have fun everyone :two_hearts:

Sounds great! Have fun guys!

Any chance to use spritesheets ?) It looks like it was available in SNES…like some monsters and fires in castelvania IV

They used it in a bunch of games, but for each effect they weren’t to big. For example used up to 14 sprites but for anticipation, effect, hit and resolution.
Here are the attack sprites from MegaManX for reference: SNES - Mega Man X - Weapons and Items - The Spriters Resource
