Mesmerizing. Also curious about the colors… Mask the high emission areas and do some sort of animated chromatic aberration with the rbg channels? Or did you get the colors from the steps you outlined in after effects?

I used the normal map of the flipbook and plugged it into the reflection vector and then a triplanar that used a nice soft chromatic caustics texture.

I had a couple layers of this with different tiling and offsets on the Time. This was the color of my material while the flipbook I posted earlier was the alpha.

Edit: That was the main flipbook element at least. There were two other main elements to the effect that I could do a quick post about at some point.

This whole thing really makes me want to try and recreate it with a blender smoke sim.
Maybe I will if I find the time
