My first portfolio piece, feedback welcome!

Effect video!

Hello RTVFX,

I’m fairly new to this craft and have been doing small effects for the past few months as I completed my studies in game design.

This is my first time building a proper portfolio piece outside of my studies and it took a number of weeks. It’s supposed to be a strong player AOE attack inspired by action RPG games like Path of Exile and Diablo.

I’d love any feedback anyone might have as I improve my craft and begin my next piece!

I hope you like it, thanks!

You can find a more in depth breakdown of the effect here: Artstation Post

great idea! I liked it.

one of the things I’ve enjoyed the most was exactly the flash texture, and the explosion part of the effect

if I were to offer some criticism, I’d iterate on the fire. It burns in a very cylindrical area, which corresponds with the effect bellow, but makes the particle spawning area so uniform. Maybe increasing the life-time variation would add more height variation, ¿increasing size variation at spawn? and you can even sample panning noise texture to make sure the whole cylinder surface is not always spawning. This would also make the sprite less obvious.

These are just some ideas of what I’d do, but maybe they won’t do well once implemented. In any case well done

Thanks so much for the feedback! I appreciate it.

Yeah, something I felt was that there’s a good few seconds as it burns where it feels too uniform and repetitive because nothing new is happening and it gets a little un-interesting. Thank you for the suggestion! That could definitely spice things up and make it less uniform.

Thanks!

Really cool, i like it expecially the explosion part.

If I can say something about it that can be improved maybe you can try to add some variation to the fire and reduce a little the lifetime of it and also add some details of the meteor that arrives.
Otherwise I really like it, I’m curious about your next projects

Thank you for the feedback!

Some great suggestions, and I agree the fire needs some variation and meteor could use some additional detail.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
