Laura's Sketchbook

Heya! I’m Laura
And I have finally got around to making a sketchbook to share some of my VFX experiments and personal work :raised_hands:

Last year, I ran my first VFX community challenge called ExplosionTober :boom:

Quick Summary of the Challenge:
The ExplosionTober VFX challenge is an annual month-long challenge held in October, where each day features a different prompt (31 days, 31 prompts). By providing the subject matter, an explosion, and a different theme each day of October, this allows artists to focus on being creative, their goals and learning objectives, while removing the ‘umming and ahing’ about what to make.

For me, it was important to have themes that could be interpreted in different ways, but also have some of the prompts touch on the more ‘typical’ explosions in games/film, Eg. Grenades. Alongside this flexibility was an important factor, so I generated two sets of prompts:

  • Prompt List 1 – 31 prompts in 31 days.
  • Prompt List 2 – 13 prompts in 31 days, to allow a few extra days per prompt for artists to complete their explosions.

The challenge is open to a wide range of VFX types, such as 2D VFX, 3D VFX (Real-time or Simulation)

Here are my results from 2024, along with the full 31-day prompt list:

It’s crazy to think that a year has passed since I made these

So… what will be the prompts for ExplosionTober 2025?
Luckily, you won’t have to wait; here they are:

Prompt List 1 (31 prompts, 31 days) :

Prompt List 2 (13 prompts, 31 days) :

I’ll be posting my results here during October - All feedback and thoughts are welcome
Super excited to see what this ExplosionTober will bring :boom:

If you want to get involved, tag me and use the ExplosionTober hashtags

It’s officially October! :ghost: :jack_o_lantern:
Which means ExplosionTober has just begun :scream:

Here is my take on a Concrete Explosion

It’s not as polished as I would like, as I moved house last week, but I’m still super proud of what I was able to achieve today!

Super excited to see what everyone creates this ExplosionTober season :boom:

ExplosionTober Day 2 - Firework :fireworks:

Decided to keep this one super simple today and create a few different colourways of Peony fireworks. These tend to have the most referential firework shape (I had no idea there were so many other types  )

ExplosionTober Day 3 - Glacial :ice_cube:

Had a super fun time putting this spikey snow explosion together :snowflake:

ExplosionTober Day 4 - Star :dizzy:

Orange and purple is one of my favourite colour combos, so it was fun to create an effect with this palette in mind

ExplosionTober Day 5 - Shock :zap:

This was my first time really exploring stylised VFX, and I learned a lot, but I know there is still a lot for me to learn - if anyone has any good videos about stylised VFX, I would love to take a look

It was really interesting to understand the process of making stylised VFX and makes me curious what the result would be if I implement some more stylised shapes and techniques into my future work - maybe I’ll test it out over the rest of this challenge

ExplosionTober Day 6 - Interstellar :milky_way:

Today’s explosion was so fun to create! :boom:

My first attempt at blending stylised VFX visuals with semi-realistic VFX :raised_hands:
I think it’s pretty successful, especially for something that only took a couple of hours to put together, but I think I can push this further as well as refine the implementation

ExplosionTober Day 7 - Smoky :face_in_clouds:

Week 1 of ExplosionTober is officially completed :raised_hands:

Thanks so much to everyone who is participating, giving feedback, asking questions and encouraging each other - you’re all so amazing! I’m obsessed with everyone’s creative explosions  :boom:

ExplosionTober Day 8 - Insect :butterfly:

I chose the monarch butterfly for this explosion, heavily influenced by my love for Animal Crossing

ExplosionTober Day 9 - Golden :sparkles:

This explosion is definitely one of my favourites of the challenge so far! I’m so proud of how this one turned out! I think it looks super cool!!! :scream:

ExplosionTober Day 10 - Tropical :melon:

I’ve always wanted to do a watermelon explosion, so naturally, I watched a fair amount of The Slow Mo Guys on YouTube for reference - I think it turned out pretty good

ExplosionTober Day 11 - Holographic :space_invader:

This explosion really made me use my brain, as I didn’t want to go down the pixel route, as I had done that last year
So I ended up watching a whole load of old sci-fi movies and found some great refs
They typically used a repeating line overlay for their holograms, so I decided to give it a go for my explosion :raised_hands:

ExplosionTober Day 13 - Prism :rainbow:

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all are having a good day!!!

Played around with the idea of what it would be like if a prism exploded
So lots of rainbow chroma-infused energy with triangle fragments

Sadly, didn’t have a huge amount of time to focus on this today, but super happy with the result I got
