Kimmy: Sketch #67

Hello! This is my first time posting here and also my first time participating in the vfxsketch challenge. Here’s the link to my final piece:

I didn’t initially post when I first started on the piece b/c I wasn’t so sure if I was going to commit to it. But now that I finished, I do have all my previous passes and notes so I’ll update this thread of my progress. :]

(this is my first time also posting on a forum in general, so I have no idea what I’m doing :sob: )

I started off w/ brainstorming and gathering inspiration from Pinterest. Compiling everything together and dissecting what parts I want to include in this fx.

The idea was having a two part attack. First part freezing the opponent then the second part being an attack that detonates the freeze and resulting in an explosion.

After gathering my inspo, I decided to just make it exist w/ a rough block in!

Continued working it and building the pieces to get a stronger idea. Explosion not included since it wasn’t changed at this time.

Went back to brainstorming on the 2nd attack b/c I didn’t know what I exactly wanted in the second attack. Just needed to create a clear visual for myself so I could have something to reference while I was building more of this piece.

At the time, League of Legends also released their handful of Winter Wonder skins so I went to look at them for more references and inspirations. Dissecting whatever interested me and incorporating it in this piece.

Then came my second pass! Slowly chipping away from the block-in by building textures, shaders, and adding color. Also adjusted the timing too! This was presented during VFX-A’s weekly mentor session to receive feedback and get some more ideas to build upon.

Feedback was to add more layers to the laser, make the impact (from the laser) more punchier, control the color values, and add a timer for when the explosion is coming.

This is the third pass after intaking all the feedback!

Was then suggested to reuse the frost particles (that appear in the beginning) in the explosion.

Last part of the piece was to work on the explosion. So I went on another inspo hunt and dissected some explosions.

Also was given an idea to make the explosion look like a snowglobe and it lead me towards looking at frozen bubbles!

Thought this concept was amazing so I had to incorporate it into the explosion!

All which lead me to finishing the piece.

I had a lot of fun working on this! I’m not the best at thoroughly conveying my thought process so I hope the visuals helped seeing how I tackled this project.
