I’m part of a small team that’s working on building an entry level, free, open-source 3D character and scene creation tool called PoseStudio.
The current available tools for 3D character and scene design is generally either robust, but intimidating to new users who don’t have a background in 3D design, or they’re easy to use but also frustratingly outdated, buggy, and limited in scope.
We are starting PoseStudio because we want there to be something that is both free/open source, and high quality. We want to create a 3D tool that is modern, reliable, easy to use, and will continue to be shaped by the community it belongs to.
We’re building Pose Studio using the Vulkan API rather than Open GL for the sake of cross-platform compatibility, but we’re still figuring out the workflows, UI, roadmap, etc. Feel free to check out the repo.
If you’re interested in being involved, we have a lot of testing, dev, and general tasks we’re going to need help with.
We’re also seeking feedback on:
- What would make something like this worth trying for you?
- What features matter most early on: posing, rigging, animation, asset import/export, UI simplicity, documentation?
- What issues have you experienced with existing character workflows?
- If you’re a developer, is the repo/contribution path clear enough to jump in?
We’ll be hosting a BTS screenshare livestream on our Discord server This Thursday, 7/2/26 at 11 am ET to demo what we’ve got so far, take input, and answer questions.
