Harry Johnston: Sketch #64

My first time doing a Real-Time VFX challenge! :))

Starting off with a sketch for a cute box character that will burst open to reveal an item. Aiming to model/animate them in Blender, then do the fancy vfx stuff in Unreal!

Update 31/10/2024:
Here’s my submission! Quite a few changes from the initial sketch but I’m very please with the outcome

Finally got round to animating boxy, changed it a bit from the initial idea because his likeness wasn’t translating well to 3D from my sketch :')

I apologise for the lack of updates! I have been working on it however real life kept me busy and it slipped my mind to post about it here. So prepare for multiple updates all at once

The initial vfx blockout! For the burst I took inspiration from the game Astro Bot and it’s gacha item vfx/particles.

In the burst, I included some bats. I saw this tweet https://x.com/bryanvenzen/status/1837577045653561450 and wanted to try my hand at it, and I’m very pleased with how it looks!

Updated the animation with the idea of adding some wind vfx to give it a reason to rise up.
UpdatedAnim

An update of the VFX. I added some smoke/dust and a ground mark for when the box initially hits the floor, an initial attempt at wind vfx and tried to implement some colour into the burst particles.

Had a change of plans for the “wind”. I made a material to make it fit in with the colour scheme and created a few updated meshes for it to travel along.

A general polish of everything

For the prize reveal at the end of the vfx, I modelled a pumpkin in Blender and made the texture in Photoshop.

Close to the finish line
