Bake to Vertex Color


I want to bake some data to a mesh’s vertex color, specifically its thickness. Is there a way to do this? Or even a way to transfer it from a texture?


I know that in 3ds max, you can bake from a bitmap to vertex colors:

And you can render a thickness map in substance. I’ve seen people make thickness bakes elsewhere by inverting the mesh’s normals and rendering an AO map from that.

I also noticed that zbrush is capable of doing this as well but 3ds Max is going to be more practical.
