Aimy's FX Sketchbook

Hellow!! :hatched_chick:

Finally decided to start posting here!!

Soo, to start this off, I just got my BSc in Software Engineering last month and have been creating 3D stuff/ Digital Drawing from time to time since I left high school, that was about 6 years ago. Though I went a bit off road from an Art path, as a massive gamer I have always wanted to create cool games (every gamer’s dream lol). :space_invader:

Fast forward to now, I just wanted to stop doing SE for life and do the thing I always loved doing, which is game development. But as I tapped into different departments of game development I was intrigued by RT-VFX as it aligned with the disciplines I already had. So, at last I’m here, hoping to get better with my craft. :bug:

Once again, I’m really glad to be in this amazing community and I’m gonna be dumping my work here so please feel free to give any constructive criticism as it will help me glow up big time!!

VFX PORTFOLIO #001

Stylized Great-Hammer Attack VFX

High Quality Demonstration:

Detailed Breakdown:

This is my 1st portfolio piece I’ve done after learning Real-Time VFX for about 3 months. I’ve been playing Hades II for the past couple of weeks and was really inspired by its art style. So, to test out my VFX skills, I decided to make a Great-Hammer Attack like the one in the game, but with my own little touches. It’s safe to say that doing this effect in Niagara in UE5 was a bit of a challenge and I had to figure out a lot of things I didn’t know to make the effect I had in mind. And it’s also safe to say that I’m more than happy how it turned out to be. The final effect was even better than I hoped to archive. :chipmunk:

What a cool effect and breakdown!! I’m quite new to real-time vfx and wonder where did u learn vfx from. Can u recommened some courses or tutorials u took? Thank you so much.

Hey duogho!! Sorry for the late reply, now only saw the notification. Thank you, I’m glad you liked it. :raised_hands:t2:

For the resources, I did the Material Courses and Niagara Courses by Thomas Harle. Learned a lot of techniques there, having a deep understanding of the Material Editor is a huge plus for VFX. And then for making actual effects I did the Patreon tutorials by Pawel Margacz (1MAFX), he’s got a really clean and effective workflow. You’ll learn a lot of techniques there as well. After that I started making my own effects to practice what I learned. This effect I made is a result of that. I’d say start getting a good grasp of Material Editor and Niagara System and then start making your own effects to practice what you learned. Then go to Artstation, Pinterest, Realtimevfx.com or any kinda place to see the effects others have done, and try to recreate them with the knowledge you have. You’ll learn fast that way.

For advanced stuff, I don’t have a single source where you can learn everything from, but I just visit vfx communities, read articles and watch vfx breakdowns on YT and things like that. Since you have a good understanding of the particle systems and materials at this point, you’ll be able to understand the advanced concepts on your own with a bit of effort. And then you continue from there. :pinched_fingers:t2:

Let me know if you wanna know anything else too. Wish you a good luck mate!! :raised_hands:t2:
